Women’s Advancement in Banking in Emerging South Asian Countries

Women’s Advancement in Banking in Emerging South Asian Countries

Narrative Description of Project:

This landmark regional study, commissioned by International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank Group, was designed to diagnose the systemic factors influencing women's career progression in South Asia's banking sector. The research aimed to move beyond quantifying representation and instead uncover the root causes—both structural barriers and organizational enablers—that impact gender equity in leadership. To build a holistic understanding, the study engaged over 2,600 banking employees who provided data on workplace experiences, and 18 HR representatives who offered critical insights into formal policies and institutional practices. The quantitative surveys were complemented with focus group discussions across all four countries—India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
